Top Five Most Successful Copa America Teams Print E-mail
ArAgentina Copa AmericaFootball News: The Copa America is the world's oldest international football tournament, dating back to 1916.

Since then the competition has taken different league and knockout style formats, although invariably the same teams always end up on top. 1. Argentina

Argentina have been the most dominant nation in Copa America history.

They are joint top winners of the tournament - 14 occasions - and have won 107 of their 169 matches played.

Their best moment came in 1991 when they defeated bitter rivals Brazil 3-2 in the decisive league match - five players were sent off in an intense encounter.

2. Uruguay

Uruguay have achieved success on a regular basis in the Copa America, although they have not lifted the trophy since 1995.

They are equal with Argentina as the most successful team in the tournament's history, having won it 14 times and finishing as runner-up on six occasions.

Their 1995 victory over the World Cup holders Brazil will go down in Uruguayan history as the most memorable - after drawing 1-1 they triumphed 5-3 on penalties.

3. Brazil

In recent years it has been hard for any team in the Copa America to get close to mighty Brazil.

Although trailing Argentina and Uruguay in the trophy stakes - they have won on eight occasions - Brazil have triumphed in four of the past five tournaments.

No result has been sweeter than the 2007 final against Argentina. After going into the game without the likes of Kaka and Ronaldinho - goals from Julio Baptista, Robert Ayala (og) and Daniel Alves secured a 3-0 victory.

4. Paraguay

It has been a rarity when any of the 'big three' have failed to win the Copa America although Paraguay have managed to cause an upset on two occasions.

In 1953 they defeated the defending champions Brazil 3-2 in a playoff match. It took them 26 years to lift the trophy again - defeating Chile on goal difference over a three match playoff.

5. Peru

Peru became the first team outside the 'big three' to win the Copa America. In 1939 they won all four matches they played - although Brazil and Argentina were not involved.

After 36 years they defeated Colombia by two games to one in a playoff to taste success once more.

Having hosted the tournament on six occasions they will probably believe they should have achieved more.

For the record

The worst team to have played regularly in the Copa America are without doubt Venezuela - their defeat of the United States in 2007 was their first win in 45 matches.

Brazil deserved to win the Copa America in 2007! Are the current Argentina side the biggest underachivers in world football? (Sportasylum)
